Hi! My name is Mac and I am a Macaroni Penguin. My family lives on Bird Island, in Antarctica. I have a very large family and we love to go out and play in the ocean. One day, while out swimming with my family, I saw a pretty blue and purple fish swim swiftly by me. Being a curious penguin, I went to say hello. My mom always told me not to swim off by myself but I forgot. By the time I caught up with this fish, I had swum far from my family and did not know how to get back.
The pretty fish was called Izzy. She was an Ice Fish. She swam along with me to help me find my way and we swam for a while until coming upon a school of fish. They were learning how to swim in a line and play follow the leader. They were quite good at it too! Izzy and I stopped to watch them when, suddenly, a super silly seal swam up to us, singing silly songs and doing somersaults!
The seal told us his name was Sally and he asked if he could tag along to help me find my family. As night fell, we came to a rocky little island. Feeling tired, Sally, Izzy and I decided to rest for the night. Izzy found a little pool to rest in and Sally climbed up on the rocks with me.
In the morning, Sally thought it would be fun to explore the island for hidden treasure. While Izzy swam along the shore, I walked with Sally around the island picking out pretty shells. Suddenly we heard a loud yawning sound coming from a pile of rocks ahead of us. Curious, we sped ahead and found a large, weary, wiggly walrus, stretched out in the sand.
When the walrus woke up he told us his name was Wally. We introduced ourselves and told him about our journey. Wally decided to come along and help. So, Sally the Seal, Wally the Walrus, Izzy the Ice Fish and me, Mac the Macaroni Penguin, set out for another day of swimming adventures while looking for my family. Late in the day we came to a wonderful, white, beach, in a land called America. We decided to stop and stay for a while hoping we could find more help getting back to Bird Island.
We met many people in America who were amazed that we had swum so far. They told us, many children in America did not know how to swim. Sally, Wally, Izzy and I thought we could help because we are all such good swimmers! We started our S.W.I.M. program, named after each of us, to the children of America explore the joys of swimming!
Learn more about our adventures and the friends we meet as we give children confidence in the water, explore the wonder of land and sea and face our own challenges. I am still hopeful that one day I will return to Bird Island and see my family again, but until then, I will continue my work with my new family at the Aquatic Adventures S.W.I.M. Programs.
